I’m Barry Henderson, a self-taught photographer based in the beautiful region of Cumbria. My work is inspired by the natural world around me — the mountains, lakes, wildlife, and changing skies that make this area so extraordinary. Growing up in the heart of the Lake District, I was surrounded by breathtaking scenery, which sparked my lifelong appreciation for nature and storytelling through imagery.
My journey into photography began as a hobby, armed with nothing more than a basic camera and a sense of curiosity. I spent weekends exploring the countryside, gradually developing my skills and eye for composition. A defining moment came in 2014, when the Canadian Avro Lancaster VRA, KB726, arrived in England to tour with the RAF BBMF Lancaster KCA, PA474. It was then that I bought my first DSLR — and truly began to explore photography as a serious creative pursuit.
Today, my work blends instinct and technique, with a style that’s always evolving. I don’t always head out with a set goal — often, I just follow my curiosity. If something captures my attention, I shoot it. I believe that the best images are found in unexpected moments.
Capturing the Beauty of Nature and Landscapes
Cumbria provides a dreamlike backdrop for any photographer. My landscape photography often focuses on the Lake District, where the interplay of light, water, and rugged terrain creates atmospheric and emotionally charged scenes. From hidden trails to lesser-known lakes, I’m always on the lookout for those quiet, magical spots many people miss.
Much of my work is shaped by light — especially during golden hour, when the soft morning or evening light adds mood and depth. I carefully plan shoots around weather and time of day, using long exposures, natural framing, and thoughtful composition to bring out the textures, shadows, and vibrancy of the environment.
Each photograph is more than a picture — it’s a story, a feeling, a memory. Whether it’s a misty morning at Windermere or a crisp winter walk through the hills, I aim to capture not just what I see, but what I feel in that moment.
The World of Cosplay Through My Lens
Alongside landscapes, I also have a deep appreciation for the creativity and community found in cosplay. Photographing comic conventions and individual cosplayers has become a significant part of my work — a space where photography, performance, and storytelling collide.
Cosplay shoots are about more than just capturing costumes. I collaborate closely with each cosplayer to understand their character, vision, and style. Whether we’re working with a studio setup or using Cumbria’s dramatic scenery as a backdrop, I strive to reflect both the personality of the character and the dedication behind the costume.
These sessions are often dynamic and fun, and I love the challenge of bringing fictional characters to life through lighting, setting, and detail. Many cosplayers have said I help them feel confident and seen — and for me, that’s the highest compliment.
One of my favourite cosplay projects was shooting the Cumbria Superheroes Calendar in support of Hospice at Home West Cumbria — a great cause and a creative highlight.
